AI receptionists for law firms
For a firm, the receptionist is often the first point of contact with a potential client. That makes intake quality, conflict screening, practice-management integration and professional-responsibility rules more important than headline price.
Information, not legal advice. Professional-responsibility rules vary by jurisdiction. Check your state bar's rules and opinions before deploying any AI tool that communicates with prospective clients.

Ethics questions to resolve first
The ABA's Formal Opinion 512 (July 2024) addresses lawyers' use of generative AI tools, including competence, confidentiality, communication with clients, supervision and fees. Several state bars have issued their own guidance, including the Florida Bar's Ethics Opinion 24-1. Questions firms commonly work through before deploying an AI receptionist:
- Will callers be told they are speaking with an AI, and how?
- How does the script avoid giving legal advice or creating the impression of an attorney-client relationship?
- What information is collected before a conflict check, and where is it stored? Is the vendor's data handling compatible with confidentiality obligations?
- Who at the firm supervises and reviews the system's output?
- Are calls recorded, and does that comply with the consent laws of the states your callers are in?
Editorial opinion
- Firms that receive emotionally difficult first calls (criminal defense, family law, personal injury) should favor a live service or an AI plan with live escalation.
- Firms that mainly need after-hours capture and scheduling into Clio have credible, much cheaper AI options; test intake accuracy before relying on them.
- Price conflict checks and intake add-ons into any per-call comparison; they change the total meaningfully on live plans.
