AI receptionist vs live answering service
On published prices, AI receptionists cost a fraction of live, human-staffed services at the same call volume. The real question is which calls you can safely let software handle.

At 100 calls a month (3-minute average), the AI plans in this table range from $79 (Starter) at Goodcall to $212.50 (Pro 75) at Smith.ai AI Receptionist, while live services run $645 (100 minutes) (Posh) and $915 (Basic) (Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists). Ruby, another major live service, does not show receptionist plan prices in its public page text, so it is not in the table.
Where each model differs
| AI receptionist | Live answering service | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing | Per call, per minute, per unique caller or flat unlimited | Per receptionist minute or per call, usually with higher unit prices |
| Concurrency | Vendors such as Rosie and NextPhone state that multiple calls are handled at once | Depends on staffing |
| Human judgment | Transfers to your team; some (Smith.ai AI Receptionist) can escalate to live agents | Built in |
| Spam | Several vendors exclude spam from billing (Upfirst, Goodcall) | Smith.ai excludes spam when caller ID passes |
| Setup | Often self-serve, trained from your website | Onboarding with the provider's team |
Editorial opinion: how to decide
- If most calls are routine (hours, pricing, booking, message-taking), an AI plan is the obvious starting point on cost alone. Test it with the 12 test calls first.
- If a meaningful share of calls are emotional, high-stakes or unpredictable (for example, potential clients in a crisis), a live service or an AI plan with live escalation is the safer choice.
- A common middle path is AI for after-hours and overflow, with your own staff or a live service during core hours. Upfirst, for example, lets you choose whether it answers every call, overflow only, or after hours.
